ZAIN received hands-on training in ceramics from her father, the renowned artist Kim Syyoung, beginning in her early school years. From 2010 to 2016, she developed her own large-scale ceramic sculptural works, which continued to be exhibited through 2020.
This formative period—shaped by fire, material, and generational knowledge—became a foundational point of collaboration, and a vital seedbed for her later visual language in painting and installation.
ZAIN은 초등학교 시절부터 도예가인 아버지 김시영에게 도예를 사사받았습니다. 2010년부터 2016년까지는 대규모 설치 조형을 포함한 독자적인 도자 작업을 전개하였고, 이들 작품은 2020년까지 전시되었습니다.
물질과 불, 세대 간의 지식이 어우러진 이 시기는 그녀에게 있어 매체를 넘어선 형태와 감각의 기원이자, 이후 회화 및 설치 작업의 내적 기반이 되었습니다.
Behind the Practice
In 2014, when her father's studio relocated, ZAIN led the redesign and restructuring of the space, contributing materially to the formation of its physical environment. From 2014 to 2020, she managed the studio’s overall operations—hosting international collectors, orchestrating tea-based performance rituals, and shaping the atmosphere of encounter.
Notably, in 2019 she was directly involved in the acquisition of Kim Syyoung’s work by the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. In 2018, she introduced his practice to Axel Vervoordt Gallery in Belgium, which later culminated in their collaboration at Frieze Masters Seoul 2023.
She also curated and performed tea ceremonies and guided tours during official visits by Japanese delegates and South American ambassadors as part of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics cultural program in 2018.
These embodied, behind-the-scenes experiences laid the groundwork for her current practice centered on field resonance, presence, and relational aesthetics.
2014년 아버지의 작업실 이전을 계기로, ZAIN은 스튜디오의 설계 및 공간 구조 개편을 주도하며 물리적 환경 조성에 실질적으로 기여하였습니다. 이후 2014년부터 2020년까지 매니저로서 운영 전반을 맡으며 국내외 VIP 및 기관 컬렉터 응대, 다도 기반의 의례 퍼포먼스를 기획해왔습니다.
대표적인 예로, 2019년에는 런던 빅토리아 앤 앨버트 뮤지엄의 작품 소장 과정에 직접 관여하였고, 2018년에는 벨기에 악셀 베르보르트 갤러리에 김시영의 작업을 소개하며 2023년 프리즈 마스터스 서울에서의 협업으로 이어졌습니다. 또한 평창 동계올림픽(2018) 당시 일본 대표단 및 남미 대사관 인사 초청을 포함한 국빈 방문 시 도슨트와 다도 의례를 기획·진행한 바 있습니다.
이러한 경험들은 ZAIN의 감응적 회화 및 장소 기반 퍼포먼스에서 관계, 리듬, 공명의 윤리를 구축하는 토양이 되었습니다.
